Commit to Your Chosen Training Plan – Don’t Quit

Zumba? Pilates? Crossfit? Spin classes? Interval training? Yoga? Resistance training? The Paleo Diet? 5:2? The Zone Diet?

The list could go on.

There is so much variety when it comes to choosing a suitable nutritional or training plan.

Some of us dedicate ourselves to a specific plan, whilst others of us are a little more promiscuous, dipping our toes into various ponds to see what other approaches have to offer.

The sensible ones amongst us will align what we do with our goals.

Need more flexibility? Yoga is usually the chosen field.

Want to get stronger? Opt for the weight room and do resistance training.

The trouble is that there’s a lot of choice out there and the temptation to try something new, which promises better results, can easily distract us from the goals we had in the first place.

It’s easy to see how when each new fitness craze proudly declares it is the ‘only way to train’, we, the consumer, can lose focus and become confused.

In all honesty, I don’t think it really matters what exercise people do, so long as they do something.  Do what you enjoy.

We were designed to move daily

Thousands of years ago we even had to catch and kill our own food. Nowadays things have evolved to make life easier for us – lifts instead of stairs, cars instead of feet, fast food instead of home cooking, being just some examples.

I think we’ll all agree that life requires less effort these days and moving our bodies is something we now need to do proactively, rather than out of necessity.

When it comes to actual exercise and nutrition, I think it’s important that we find something that we enjoy doing. We will be far more than likely to remain dedicated to something that we enjoy and will do regularly, which means we’ll see greater benefits, and of course results.

The problem is that many people do a little of this and a bit of that, never truly committing to one thing, and then struggle to see why they don’t achieve their goals.

‘I eat Paleo through the week then I have a cheat weekend, where I eat and drink pretty much what I want’.

Then a few weeks down the line it’s ‘I’ve been doing paleo, but it’s not working for me’.

Hardly surprising.

And by the way, that’s not ‘doing Paleo’.

Eating well throughout the week isn’t a golden ticket to gluttonous heaven come Friday evening.

Do not reward your hard work throughout the week with junk. The same goes with exercise.

Stick to one thing and follow it through to the end.

Don’t be the person that follows the next craze then changes as soon as something more ‘fashionable’ comes around.

Commit and see it through.

You’ll get better results.

And if it isn’t working for you, at least you’ll know what to change.
