Overcoming Your Inner Resistance

Sometimes being committed to your training and nutrition feels easy; you see progress, you feel great and you’re full of energy and enthusiasm. But sometimes you need a lot of strength to maintain that commitment. Not the kind of strength that comes from resistance training, but a different kind of strength you’ll need to overcome your inner resistance.

Maybe you were a regular gym go-er at Foundry and then something happened to your routine and now you’re practically a stranger.

You might have given up smoking for a while and took it up again when you were faced with a stressful situation.

Perhaps you had good eating habits for a while and then you lapsed back in to a routine of eating ‘comfort’ foods and boozing too often.

The reason you gave up on these goals is down to a lack of inner strength and consistency. It’s something I’ve recently recognized in myself.

If you are not where you want to be right now, then you have to trust yourself to make changes and move forward. It won’t happen by itself.

So how do we develop inner strength?

Just as in physical strength training, you have to exercise the relevant skills to improve your inner strength. Skills like willpower and self-discipline are transferable to all other areas of our lives and can positively impact our professional and personal growth.

Start off small by identifying any habits you have that you want to change? It can be as simple as stop biting your nails, fidgeting or eating sugary treats. You’ll become more aware of your little habits as you catch yourself doing them and then stopping at that moment.

Think about what new good habits you want to develop; e.g. respond to unanswered emails so you don’t have an inbox full of unread emails or make sure you consistently drink your daily water intake and get 8 hours sleep each night.

Look at other everyday simple tasks and use them as a way to exercise your self-discipline. Act on everyday tasks, like household chores instead of letting them build up. Be proactive rather than lazy.

Then start applying these exercises to your long-term goals; your fitness goals or career ambitions, your golf swing, parenting skills etc. Do something each day to inch more towards achieving them.

Exercising your willpower will make all the difference to your long term success in all aspects of life.
