Coach Crystal’s Story: From Diagnosis to Strength

Meet Crystal, one of our amazing coaches at Foundry North Kensington. For her, fitness is about more than just looking good: it’s about building a strong foundation for her health. Crystal’s journey into fitness took an unexpected turn five and a half years ago when she was diagnosed with Addison’s disease, a rare autoimmune condition that can leave the body dangerously low on cortisol.

After months of feeling exhausted and unwell, a late-night hospital visit changed everything. The diagnosis was initially a shock and felt like a life sentence. Crystal thought she would never be able to train, travel, or live the active life she loved. But what seemed like a roadblock became a new path, a way to redefine strength.

Exercise is a non-negotiable, not just a hobby.

Crystal found that exercise was not just a hobby but a non-negotiable part of managing her health.

“For me, exercise and strength training is not just beneficial but essential for my future self. It offers benefits that extend far beyond looking good. Yes, I love feeling strong and having muscle, it gives me energy and confidence. But the medical benefits are what make training non-negotiable for me.”

The benefits she experienced are what drive her passion for coaching today:

  • Bone Health: Strength training helps protect her bones and maintain bone density, a crucial long-term benefit.
  • Metabolic Boost: Building and maintaining muscle mass improves her metabolism and helps her body manage energy more effectively.
  • Mental Well-being: Exercise is her go-to for improving her mood and resilience, which is vital when navigating a chronic condition.
  • Quality of Life: Every workout is a step toward maintaining her independence and ensuring she can continue to live a full, active life as she ages.

Consistency, Recovery & Community.

As a coach, Crystal teaches that having a chronic condition doesn’t mean giving up on ambitious goals. Instead, it’s about learning to work smarter. This means listening to your body more closely, planning your energy carefully, and adjusting your workouts based on how you feel. Her journey has taught her to prioritise consistency over perfection and to see saying “no” to a workout when your body needs rest as an act of strength.

Beyond her own mindset, a strong support network has been invaluable. She relies on her partner for personal encouragement, a coach who understands her condition, and the amazing Foundry community: colleagues and members who celebrate her wins and support her through struggles.

Crystal’s inspiring story proves that with the right mindset and a supportive community like Foundry, the impossible is absolutely possible. Her journey isn’t just about managing an illness; it’s about building a life defined by strength, both physical and mental.
