Find your Fitness Anchor

We all have tasks we dread—those chores that seem to linger on our to-do lists, quietly mocking us with their inevitability. For me, it’s paperwork. The red tape that comes with running a gym isn’t something I relish; it’s a burden I’d rather avoid. But just like exercise for many people, I know it’s essential, and procrastinating only makes it worse in the long run.

For many people, exercise feels like my paperwork—something you have to do, rather than something you want to do. I happen to enjoy exercise (I know, I’m one of those odd people), but I fully understand why others might suffer through it. After all, being physically uncomfortable isn’t most people’s idea of fun, and anyone who says they ‘love it’ might come off a little strange. But here’s the thing: just like paperwork, exercise is important, and ducking out of it won’t do you any favours. The key is finding your reason to show up and put in the work—your “fitness anchor.”

Share the Burden

Just like how I’ve outsourced my paperwork to an accountant, you can share the exercise burden, at least to some extent. Yes, you can’t pay someone to work out for you (wouldn’t that be nice?), but there are things you can do to make it easier and more enjoyable.

The first step is finding your hook, a personal reason to exercise that goes beyond just ticking a box. Many people struggle with fitness because they don’t have a compelling reason to turn up. Instead, they start with vague goals like “losing weight” or “getting fitter,” which, while valid, don’t always keep motivation high. If your reason for exercising is based solely on moving away from something negative, like being overweight or unfit—it may give you an initial boost, but it’s not likely to be long-lasting.

Instead, it’s far more effective to focus on moving towards something positive, whether achieving a new personal best, training for a specific event or even fitting into a particular outfit. By shifting your mindset from avoidance to ambition, you’ll have a far more compelling reason to get up and exercise.

Finding Your Fitness Hook

Finding your “fitness hook” is about setting meaningful, specific goals that motivate you to keep going. Rather than just trying to be less unfit, what if you aimed to run a 5k, master your first chin-up, or complete a Tough Mudder? These goals give your training more focus and purpose, helping you stay on track. Sticking to a workout plan is easier when you have something to aim for.

At Foundry Gym, we see this approach work wonders. Many of our members come in with aesthetic goals, which is perfectly fine, but we often encourage them to set performance based targets, too. Whether lifting heavier weights, nailing a handstand, or smashing a personal record in a race, setting performance goals also accelerates aesthetic results. When you focus on what your body can do rather than just how it looks, your motivation naturally increases, and as a bonus, you’re likely to get in better shape along the way.

Build a Community Around You

Another piece of the puzzle is sharing the experience with others. You might be unable to outsource your health and fitness, but you don’t have to go it alone. One of the biggest reasons people struggle with exercise is because they’re isolated in their journey. If you’re wrapped up in your bubble of indifference, it’s easy to find excuses not to work out.

But when you surround yourself with like-minded people, things start to change. At Foundry Gym, we believe in the power of community. Training alongside others who understand fitness’s challenges—and the rewards—can be incredibly motivating. You have people to keep you accountable, and you also gain a support network that celebrates your successes and pushes you through the tough times. Sharing your goals with others can make the process more enjoyable and sustainable.

Setting Performance Goals

Sometimes, the most challenging part of working out is finding the motivation to start, especially when the mornings get darker and those early alarms become harder to stomach. Setting performance goals can make all the difference. You’re training for a purpose rather than dragging yourself to the gym out of obligation.

These goals don’t have to be monumental—small, gym-based targets work just as well. Maybe you want to hit a new personal best on the squat rack or master an unassisted pull-up. You could set a goal to run 5k without stopping or even participate in an event like a local race or challenge.

At Foundry, we’ve seen firsthand how setting performance goals helps keep motivation high, especially when the going gets tough. When you’re working towards something specific, you’ll not only stay more consistent but also find a sense of pride and achievement when you hit your targets. That confidence boost is invaluable—it reminds you that you’re capable of more than you thought.

Sign Up for a Challenge

If you want to take things up a notch, why not sign up for a challenge? Whether it’s a 10k run, a triathlon, or even something like Tough Mudder, committing to an event gives you a tangible reason to train. It provides structure to your workouts and keeps you accountable because now, you have a deadline.

There’s no need to feel daunted by the idea of a race or challenge—there are events of all sizes and difficulties across the UK. The beauty of these challenges is that they give you something to work towards, and completing them provides an incredible sense of accomplishment. It’s also a fantastic way to bond with others on a similar journey. At Foundry, we often have groups training together for events, and the camaraderie is palpable.

Consistency

Whether you’re training for a performance goal or simply trying to stay active, consistency matters most. This is why we run our 45-day accelerator programmes throughout the year. Designed to be laser-focused, they help you set and achieve specific goals within a short, manageable time frame. Six weeks is the perfect length to stay committed, giving you enough time to see real results.

By the end of the programme, our members are not only fitter but also have built habits that keep them motivated long after the challenge is over.
