Q&A: Why Is Magnesium Deficiency a Problem For Fat Loss?

We can get magnesium from many of our foods.

Magnesium is essential for health, which is essential for fat loss!

But more specifically, magnesium plays a key role in carbohydrate metabolism and it’s deficiency may worsen insulin resistance, which is a major reason people are overweight. (Carbs aren’t the evil food that many would have you believe.  The problem lies in poor metabolism of these carbs, too many – especially of the wrong type – and poor timing of intake!).

Magnesium will also greatly help with sleep quality – perhaps the number one consideration for anyone trying to lose weight.

Why are we deficient in magnesium?

Poor soil quality (intense/poor farming practices) and overly acidic diets/lifestyles (magnesium is an alkaline mineral and is used to counter this) are the two main reasons in our view.

How do we address magnesium deficiency?

Three key steps would be to buy organic foods (especially those high in magnesium), take steps to alkalise the body and use a a good quality magnesium supplement.

Note: Many (most) magnesium supplements you’ll find are cheap products made from magnesium oxide.  Avoid these.  Go for a magnesium product that ends in ‘ate’.  Eg. Magnesium Glycinate.
